EAL/D education

Gosford Public School is a vibrant and diverse community where more than 50% of students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, with over 40 different languages spoken across the school. Many of our students and their families are learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D), which creates a rich multicultural environment. This diversity forms the foundation for our commitment to inclusive education, ensuring that every student has access to high-quality learning opportunities tailored to their language learning needs.

EAL/D education at Gosford Public School is designed to be an integral part of the whole school curriculum. Our EAL/D teacher collaborates closely with class teachers and other specialist staff to support EAL/D students effectively. All teachers share the responsibility of creating classroom environments that promote differentiated learning and celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity. This collaborative approach ensures that EAL/D students receive targeted support while participating fully in mainstream classes, fostering both language development and social inclusion.

Placement of EAL/D students in age-appropriate classes is considered essential, even when students have limited English proficiency or prior schooling. This helps students engage with peers and access the curriculum alongside their cohort. Given that EAL/D teaching resources are limited, support is carefully planned and timetabled so that the EAL/D teacher can provide effective instruction to as many students as possible, prioritising those with the greatest need. Through this structured and cooperative approach, Gosford Public School aims to maximise the learning outcomes and wellbeing of all EAL/D students.
