Opportunity Classes at Gosford Public School
Gosford Public School hosts two Opportunity Classes - Year 5 and Year 6.
The Opportunity Class learning program at our school has been thoughtfully designed by committed teachers to offer an engaging curriculum that balances academic challenge with support for the gifted child's social and emotional growth.
Our goal is to inspire a passion for learning in our students by encouraging them:
- to think critically and creatively
- to ask questions
- to engage deeply with the subjects they study
- to feel inspired
- to foster a genuine love of learning
What is an Opportunity Class?
Opportunity classes are one of the ways that the department supports high potential and gifted students. These classes are designed for students whose intellectual potential exceeds that of students of the same age.
You can apply for opportunity classes that are outside your local enrolment area.
Students sit a placement test and qualify for a place based on their results.
Is selective education the right fit for my child?
High potential and gifted students can be found across diverse family, socio-economic, language, cultural backgrounds and geographic locations.
Your child may have high academic potential if they demonstrate some of the following:
· enjoy learning
· have intense curiosity
· display a good memory
· ask complex questions
· enjoy learning new and often complex ideas or skills
· require fewer repetitions when learning new things
· are creative
· become intensely focused in their area/s of interest.
Note: Not all high potential and gifted students will display all of these characteristics, for example, due to disability, disadvantage and/or lack of opportunity.
